The first snow of winter fell silently, blanketing the whole land with an eerie frost. The animals grew restless for this heralds the coming of Moré, the Goddess of Death and Winter. Once every year, Moré passes over the forest and every creature she sees is struck dead by a fatal magic. The guardian fairy of the forest, Qali, could not bear the suffering of her people any longer but she could not face the infinite and deathly might of Moré. Instead she casts a spell over every creature, lulling them into a deep sleep, a peaceful slumber that will last through the whole winter, in the hope that this will fool Moré. One by one, the animals fell asleep, except for one who went by the name Ukaliq. Why Ukaliq refused the spell, Qali could never understand. And so she said “I will not put you to sleep, my Ukaliq, but accept this gift instead. A new coat of white fur to help you hide from Moré. Conceal yourself in the silver snow when her minions are near.” Ukaliq shed his fur and wore this new coat. “I accept this precious gift, my Lady.” Ukaliq then bowed down in gratitude before he fled and disappeared into the dead white of winter.
